The Story Behind Claxton Fruit Cake: A Holiday Tradition Since 1910

For more than 116 years, Claxton Fruit Cake has been a cherished part of holiday celebrations across America. What began as a small-town bakery in Claxton, Georgia, has grown into one of the nation's most recognized fruit cake brands—all while remaining family-owned and committed to the same quality and traditions that started it all.

A Humble Beginning in South Georgia

In 1910, Italian pastry maker Savino Tos opened a small bakery in Claxton, Georgia. After immigrating to the United States in the early 1900s, Tos settled in the South and quickly earned a reputation for his freshly baked breads, pastries, and sweet rolls.

As the holiday season approached each year, he began offering a premium fruit cake made with carefully selected fruits and nuts. Local families embraced the recipe, and a tradition was born.

The Young Boy Who Became the Owner

In 1927, an 11-year-old boy named Albert Parker walked into the bakery looking for work. He fired the ovens before sunrise, helped prepare the dough, swept floors, and learned every aspect of the business.

Albert's hard work and dedication impressed Savino Tos, and over the years the two developed a close friendship. In 1945, after nearly two decades with the bakery, Albert Parker purchased the business and began writing the next chapter in Claxton Bakery's history.

Building an American Holiday Tradition

Albert Parker believed Claxton Fruit Cake could become much more than a local favorite. During the years following World War II, he expanded production and introduced Claxton Fruit Cakes to grocery stores, fundraising organizations, and retailers across the country.

The bakery became especially well known through fundraising programs, allowing schools, churches, civic organizations, and community groups to raise money while sharing Claxton Fruit Cake with families nationwide.

As word spread, demand continued to grow, and so did the bakery.

Sharing Claxton Fruit Cake with the World

Claxton Fruit Cake gained international recognition during the 1964 and 1965 New York World's Fair, where visitors from around the world sampled the bakery's famous fruit cake.

The company also promoted its products through nationally recognized events such as the Orange Bowl Parade in Miami and the National Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington, D.C., helping introduce the Claxton name to millions of Americans.

These milestones helped establish Claxton Fruit Cake as one of America's iconic holiday desserts.

Still Family-Owned After More Than a Century

Following Albert Parker's passing in 1995, ownership remained in the Parker family. Today, Claxton Bakery continues to be operated by family members who remain committed to the values that built the company: quality, value, and exceptional customer service.

Every holiday season, skilled bakers and dedicated employees work together to produce the same delicious fruit cakes that generations of families have enjoyed for decades.
